At Dave's suggestion, I write-seeking a dub of the '80's concert video of the Smithereens-Live at the Ritz, which received airplay on MTV. I lost mine in a move and, although I haven't seen it in a while, it's still one of my favorites. Not being a memorabilia collector, I'm not sure what I would trade or pay for it, but-let's talk. Thanks.

The Smithereens were the best band of the 80's. Pat DeNuzio's lyrics are cutting edge and soulful. I've always wanted to know what his inspiration was when he wrote "A Girl Like You" and "Cut Flowers".

I don't know if you ever post negative comments about the Smithereens on the message board, 'cos I can't seem to find any concerning the new album. I consider myself to be a huge fan of the band, but am REALLY disappointed with this one. I'm not sure if everybody's just excited to be hearing ANYTHING at this point from the Smithereens, but is this really a satisfactory album after 6 years in the making? I just had to listen to Especially For You and Green Thoughts again to remind me of why I liked these guys so much to begin with. I'm sorry to say, I can't hear any of those qualities on this one. In fact, I'm not sure it's even an improvement over A Date With the Smithereens, if that's possible. I really pray that this doesn't turn out to be their final album, because what a dismal way to go out! Sorry to be so negative...it's just a little frustrating to keep waiting for them to live up to the promise of their first few albums.

Nov. 6-Tradewinds-One of those times 2 hrs. felt like 5 minutes.Guess I'm selfish but if these guys got the recognition and record sales they deserved-we'd all be waiting in lines-being aggravated by teenie-boppers- and getting nosebleeds at the shows. Critical acclaim is not a bad thing. Met the guys in New Brunswick last summer at the workshops-warm-apreciative people. Met the girls who run the fanclub Sat. night at Tradewinds-same thing. Got any job openings? Keep up the great work Smithereen clan. Thanks a bunch from an adoring fan.

The guy's new album, "God Save The Smithereens", takes the band's sound back to the early days. Songs that are tightly crafted with melodic harmonies dominate this offering, which somehow is not receiving any airplay on rock/alternative stations. In a day where image sells much better than quality, the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera and N Sync/Backstreet Boys and other mega money record companie's clones rule the roost. But the worst thing anyone could do is think that because they aren't hearing the Smithereens songs on the radio, and cannot find the new cd in the stores, that the material must not be that good. If you even had the slightest inkling of that thought..........THINK AGAIN! Pat is looked upon as an enemy by the billionaire record moguls, with his innovative ideas concerning album downloads via Liquid Audio. This idea could lead to other artists using the same method to distribute their craft, which would essentially suck billions of dollars out of the industry. So, to promote Pat and play Smithereens/Pat Dinizio songs would be suppoting the enemy. But the true fans, the ones who stuck by them through their tough times, and who continue to support them, know just how talented and well rounded the band is. This is a diverse set of songs. From the song that you could not get out of your head, (even if you wanted to), "She's Got A Way", to the rocking "The Last Good Time", you will not be disappointed. I just hope that Mr. DiNizio wasn't sending a message at the end of "The Last Good Time", where he repeats "Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye..." over and over. Maybe he knew the reception that another Smithereens album would get from the powers that be (MTV etc.). We can only hope that the guys don't give up..............

Every year at about this time, I re-discover all of my 'Reens CDs (alas, my cherished tapes have bitten the dust) and I am always thrilled to hear the tunes again. This time I also re-discovered Dave's site and it's good to post again. Hands down, save for the Beatles, Smithereens is my all-time favorite band. I cannot wait to hear the new CD and will post my thoughts when I get it and give it a listen. I saw that there will be a small tour in support of God Save. I wish we could get the guys to come to the Phoenix area for a show. (It's so pretty here this time of year--3 million Snowbirds with Minnesota license plates can't be wrong!) It's been 9 long years since I have last seen the band, and that's just far too long!!! SIGH. Guess I had better get back to the work for which I am paid, eh?

Thrilled to learn the band are sounding as tight and looking as enthusiastic as ever . . . caught the gig last night in no. VA. Was my 13th show. Enjoyed post-show chats, especially with Jim. Learned one of his friends is Jack McDowell (1993 Cy Young Award winner for non-baseball fans). Also convinced him to do the bottle trick (had given him a good-natured ribbing for not peforming that or the Shout during the show). Am hoping to catch the DE show on 29OCT on the way back from games 4-5 of the Series (go Yankees). MAGNIFICENT ALBUM, GENTLEMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have been pushing it with my on-air/staff friends at DC101 and WHFS. Finally - was most gratifying to see Karen and Faith and relate this fan's deep appreciation for their duties . . . thanks again, ladies.

Just got the new 'Reens album. This band just keeps getting better and better. By far their best release since "Green Thoughts". "House at the End of the World" may be the best bet for a single with its hip hop kinda beat, Although radio hasn't been that Smithereens friendly. I'll be listening to this new disc a lot. Let's hear it for one of the best and most underrated American rock n roll bands. See you guys on the road.

First impressions of the new cd are nearly all positive. A much more diverse group of songs than ever before. Not one of them a clunker - no Smithereens song is unlistenable but a few come real close for me. So far I'm leaning toward "Even If I Never Get Back Home" as my favorite but over time that may change. The negative? I have a hard time hearing most of these as radio tunes. They seem to need repeated listening to really enjoy & just may not get the chance with radio as is today. Of course I think 3/4 of what IS played on radio shouldn't be so what do I know. Lets all get out & support this effort from the real Worlds Greatest Rock Band - we need more & the best way to get it is great sales of the latest effort. Hope I can get to a few of the upcoming concerts and see plenty of fans at every one!

just got the new reens yesterday. just thought id add my 2 cents of what everyone probably already knows... that god save is the best reens album yet. so diverse, yet so them... the jazz, the boogie, the light alternative, the pseudo-metal. i love it. its my new favorite, and for good reason. the smithereens have put out the perfect album. it will never leave my cd player for long! cant wait to see em in 3 days.

Dave, I've been a Smithereens fan for years. I've been following them since '86 after a buddy of mine from Briele, NJ introduced them to me. Last Saturday night I saw them for the third time at Sunfest in Ocean City, MD. So I got the brilliant idea to check the web for 'reens stuff. They've got a nice official web-site, but man, you take the cake! Excellent stuff, Dave! Also, a year or so ago, I saw a CD with the Beach Boys cover "Girl Don't Tell Me". I checked your site, and found the CD. Now to just track it down... Great job, Dave!

anyone know if the "date with the Smithereens"album has been re-released yet.... i met pat dinizio after a trio show in feb.of 1998 and he told me that velvel was re-releasing it with at least eight bonus tracks.

It was a nice idea, but unfortunately, it never happened, and now, it probably won't. RCA/BMG reissued the album last year on the budget "Excelsior" label, with no bonus tracks, and generic packaging. You can usually find it for around 7 bux

Hi Everyone!! Sorry it has been awhile. In answer to the Buddy Holly question, I believe the 'Reens did play. A confidential, but reliable, source told me that Paul McCartney did a half hearted version of "Rave On". He looked weak and a bit under. He must still be in morning for his wife. Jim... the newly revised/updated Smithereens discography on this website pretty much details every Smithereens disc out there...and then some... and should answer all of your questions. If you can't find it in there, it probably does not or never did exist. Dave did a helluva job researching that section of his site. Kudos to him.

Yeah, I think the VH-1 show was fun too. I'm not quite sure why "The Waitresses" band (who had maybe 1 and 1/2 hits in their career) received more air time, though. Maybe The Smithereens didn't have enough dramatic traumas in their lives to warrant the extra television time. Whatever the case, it was still nice to see Pat's "Addams family" inspired house and the individual segments with the band. I was also glad to see them include a clip of the group playing a new song, "She's Got a Way". Anyone care to venture a guess as to where this particular performance was filmed? I'm guessing that it was a sound check at the Bottom Line in NYC, but I'm not positive about that.

Did anyone catch the Smithereens on VH-1's "Where Are They Now : New Wave" last night?

It was terrific! They interviewed everyone in the band equally, and there was footage of Dennis DJ-ing, Pat working on his web site, Mike playing with his side project, and Jim taking care of his kids. They gave a history of the band with some truly rare snapshots of the earliest days. They gave a rundown of all their past albums, and mentioned the work on the new album.

It will be replayed - keep an eye out for it, and keep a blank tape in the VCR.

The Smithereens will be playing at San Diego Street Scene on September 10 - I'm there!

Craig-- Yeah, I believe "Green Thoughts" is currently out of print. If all else fails, you might keep your eyes open at the online auction sites like ebay.com for it. I've seen "used" CD copies offered there for sale a couple of times.

I was at the Meadowlands Racetrack, with some friends, front row, to see the Smithereens on July 31, and they were spectacular. There was quite a crowd and I got to meet Pat after the show. Their new songs were great and I can't wait for the release of their new CD.

The first time I saw the Smithereens was on the Uncle Floyd show in 1981. Saw them in person at the Court Tavern in 1982, back in the days when they played there every weekend. If you stayed for the third set they would play surf songs and other oddities. Sometimes Otis Blackwell would show up. We would have to get fake ID's to get into their shows. It was a great time.

Hedwig- You can get to the lyrics for "A Girl Like You" on this website from its "links" page - under the heading "lyrics". It'll take you to another internet page which has a link to many Smithereens song lyrics including those from the "11" album. I believe that "Girl" is the first set of lyrics on that linked page.

I want to thank you for this great web site. The Smithereens are an awesome band, and I'm glad to see their music kept alive on the Internet Honestly, I have not listened to the group in years...since I graduated from college in '93. But, I pulled my old Smithereen CDs out the other day and I was reminded what a solid group they are. I'm not sure if they still tour, but if you learn of any concert dates in the South, especially around Tallahassee, please post them here! See ya...

>the smithereens always play in e flat tuning, right?? that's just >something i assumed trying to figure out their songs..

The guys tune down to E flat. They (or at least Pat) were Black Sabbath fans, and since Sabbath also tuned down, they tried it as well. Gives the guitars a more sinister sound.

As for other bands doing the same thing, tuning down a half-step is nothing new, lots of bands do it (lots of bands also tune down on stage to make it easier for the singer to hit the high notes!). My own guitar tuner even has a setting for tuning to E flat.

I used to love the Smithereens in the late '80s and early '90s, and was kind of disappointed with Blow Up then pretty much forgot about them until recently. With the exception of seeing them at Summerfest (Ringo Starr and The Brian Setzer Orchestra were playing at the same time- what a decision to make!) I really hadn't given them much thought. A couple of days ago I found my Especially For You tape and threw it in the car for a listen, and I'll be dipped in a bucket of poo, it was just like the first time I'd listened to it! I had totally forgotten how much of an influence Mike Mesaros was on my bass playing (McCartney is my bass playing idol). I remember seeing that black Rick he used to play, in fact I got an old natural finished 4001 to try to get that killer sound like on Blood and Roses and Only A Memory (I traded it in for an old Thunderbird, now I'm tempted to try to find another Rick) I've been listening to Especially and Green Thoughts learning those fabulous bass lines. It's interesting how his name doesn't come up as often as it should, as tastefully and melodically as his approach is he truly deserves to be mentioned with McCartney, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, and the other all time greats. I'm glad I found this music again! Dave

That "slow, greasy, surftype instrumental" you are trying to think of was probably a cover of Link Wray's "Rumble". "Mr. Eliminator" is another instrumental the band often does, but it is probably too raucous to fit your description. They had been performing "Rumble" quite a bit during the time period you mentioned seeing them.

I caught the Smithereens last Oct. out here in SoCal and during their encore they played a real slow, greasy, surf type instrumental I'm sure it was a cover. I've heard this song before in films and again during a recent episode of The Sopranos it's a great tune. Can anybody give me an idea as to the title of this song?

John, re:" who owns the child whose voice is at the end of Indigo Blues.???" Correct me if I'm wrong, folks, but I believe that "owner" would be the very same Jim Babjak whose song, "Now and Then" you mentioned. The "Blow Up" album notes credit one, Max Babjak, as a backing vocalist. If this was meant to be a rhetorical question... then... nevermind.

Dig out Blow Up and give it a run folk's it's truely an overlooked classic. On the subject of Blow Up,who owns the child whose voice is at the end of Indigo Blues.???

So far I've seen them twice, both times in Iowa City (1990 at Carver Hawkeye Arena; 1994 at The First Avenue Club). This is definitely a band people need to see live to fully appreciate!

You know, there seems very little presence on the web for the Smithereens. I'd like to help change that. I've had to search around to find any info at all. The domain name, "smithereens.com" is up for sale (maybe at too high of a price). It would be nice, however, for them to have the domain name they deserve. It seems to me that the time is ripe for a comeback, because non-rap acts are finally being granted air time after so many years of rap dominance. If Barenaked Ladies have a hit right now, then think how the Smithereens could thrive! You have to forgive me, because I don't know what's been happening with the band for quite some time now. I did see them back in Ohio when they played a club at Ohio State. Of course, they blew the roof of the dump! My memory has faded and I'm not quite sure if it was the Green Thoughts Tour or Eleven. What I do know for certain is that they're one of my two all-time favorite bands and they need some fan-based promotion. We've gotta get behind them, even if the Smithereens are not together anymore. They have given us some wonderful music. Their sound is very unique, and DiNizio is a great front man. I'm sure their fans respect them too much to put up MP3's without their permission, but it would be nice to have them endorse the release of a few Smithereens songs on the web in MP3 format so that others unfamiliar with them can get a taste. They may get hooked, like me! That's all my "talk, talk, talkin.' Dan

What a shame if after all this time and all the work the band has recently done on the new songs if Velvel goes under or can't properly promote this cd. The guys in the band deserve a bit of good luck & we fans hope to get our long awaited new music from the best rock n roll band in the world. Heads up - The Dicators are playing the Court Tavern 4/23 and Maxwells in Hoboken 4/30. I would urge all you NJ/NY area Smithereen fans to check out this legendary protopunk/surfmetal band. Dennis actually was the one who turned me on to them while we were in high school. We (Dennis, Mike and Jim) used to go into the city to see them in the mid-'70s. Spoke with Jimmy recently trying to hook up with him to see the 'tators when they played at the Brighton Bar in Long Branch but he is way too busy. He did say that Dennis and Mike went to the grand opening of a bar that the lead singer of the Dictators recently opened in the city called Manitoba's. He says they keep in touch with those guys. Dennis and Mike also worked with Scott Kempner of the Dictators in that band with Dion. My point is that these guys were a big influence on the Smithereens and that The Dictators are just one of those great bands who have never been at the right place at the right time. Check out thedictators.com and the links thru the fan page dffd123@aol to read about the history of the band etc.

Being a long time futurist and new romantic, Ultravox, Japan, Human League etc, I was lent the blown to smithereens album by a frind who said "This will be too guitary for you" First time I listened to it I did not think it any good and then it grew on me. It has been in my car since November. Brilliant the only crappy track is in a lonely place. I wish I had discovered them earlier so I could have seen them when they were in London. It would be nice to have some lyrics, but the current project is a win95 theme, any interest? only a memory

Hello out there in Smithereens-land!

I just finished a massive re-design of my Smithereens page - stop by http://ww.lanois.com/smithereens/ if you have a chance. The changes I made will make the pages load alot faster, and I've organized things to make navigation much, much easier. Enjoy!

Just booked my flight to Chicago to catch the Smithereens at the Hard Rock on May 13. Also going to catch a couple of Cubs games (The Smithereens and the Cubs- a dream combo for me.) THEY BETTER NOT CANCEL THIS GIG!!! Any additional information about this gig would be appreciated. Anybody else plan on attending?? I didn't know they had concerts at the Hard Rock in Chicago... Later- Michael

Hi. My name is Sami (a finnish version on Sam, I quess). I'm a long time Smithereens fan. I bought my first 'reens album (they still made vinyl-lp's in those days), which was "green thoughts" by the way, from London on a holiday trip. I immidiately fell in love with the guitars and the melodies, and that affection for their music has just grown deeper over the years. Although I 've got all the records (now on cd of course) "green..." has remained my absolute favourite, propably because it was THE first one I heard. I like "date" very much though (in fact I'm listening to it as I write this). Anyone interested in exchanging thoughts about the 'reens or anything else for that matter, contact me via e-mail. Especially students 'round the world. I'm currently studying to be a teacher in the universty of Turku, so drop me a line. Sami Tammioja

I caught the 'reens at the world famous Coach House, in SJC, on june 4, 1988. Until recently, i have not seen a show that was anywhere near as good. The crew played a half hour version of blood and roses, walked and played on the bar and tables, and otherwise rocked. I was only 16-1/2, so I thought all live shows were this good. I've seen many since - played some myself, even - but never was utterly blown away like I was when I saw the smithereens. For whatever reason, I have not seen them since. And I'm embarassed to say that I put my Smithereens albums on the shelf throughout the nineties, and got too caught up in the grunge thing, both as a listener and a writer. Recently, the smithereens have once again taken a forefront in my world, particularly as an influence in my song writing. Since 1988, however, I've seen REM twice, Guadalcanal Diary, Posies, Pearl Jam, Black Crowes, Live, Catherine Wheel twice, and countless others, whose shows aren't even worth mentioning in this context. The ones I mentioned were great shows, but nothing like Smithereens. last month I saw the Afghan Whigs at their finest here in Austin - the infamous show where Greg Dulli got in a fight with the stage hand, and ended up in the hospital. The Whigs put on an amazing show - a breath of fresh air, as it were. It brought back memories of high school and Smithereens. It was not until then that I realized that there had been a musical void in my life over the last decade. Smithereens, bring back real rock and roll to me - I've repented, and I'm ready. Pat and crew, I'm sorry I turned my back on you for so many years while I was off playing the prodigal son in alternapalooza land. Can you forgive me? Can you please go on tour, so I can take my wife and show her what a real rock and roll show is all about? We're desperate.

From 1982 to 1998 I was a free-lance music photographer/writer. During that time I covered a number of the Smithereens show in Philadelphia. The last time I saw them was several years back when they did the TLA on South Street in Philly. Last year I photographed Pat with his solo band at the Northstar in Philly. Do you know if the Smithereens are going to be playiying the Philadelphia area anytime soon. Would appreciate any info. Thanx Rob.

It's hard to point out one particular album or song that is my favorite, but I've done my best. It'd be easier to pick a favorite song from each album. I really like that gritty version of "Blood and Roses" (original band demo) on Attack of the Smithereens. There's some about the static and hollow sound of the recording along with the reverb on the guitars that gives a really complete sound. Can't wait for the new CD... BTW, I noticed that Beauty and Sadness wasn't listed in the Favorite Album box.

Unfortunately, the January '99 shows at the Court Tavern and Kenny's Castaways have been postponed, gentle readers. It's possible that they may be re-scheduled for some time in February. When we at DSP get the word on the new dates, you (the world's smartest Smithereens fans!) will have it too!

Top, top....

For all you New Jersey area Smithereens fans, it looks like they'll be returning to The Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ again on Friday, January 29, 1999. Those of you who saw them during they're weekly shows there last summer know what great shows those were. Don't miss the chance to see them in their home venue. For more info, check out The Court Tavern

I just heard on the radio that a member of the 'reens was a part of a new Guns n Roses project. I didn't hear if it was studio or live. Do you have any news regarding this announcement?

I have only seen the band one time, but I'll never forget it. It was at a small club near the Penn State campus and they rocked! I went with a bandmate and his wife and we talked to Pat and Dennis before the show. These guys are so down to earth and accomodating to their fans it's amazing. We asked them if after the gig they wouldn't mind signing a concert bill for us and sure enough they all did! I have it framed along with one of Pat's guitar picks and my ticket to the show. It proudly resides on the wall of my party room. The band itself resides in my heart. Keep on rockin' guys! You're the greatest! These guys deserve more recognition than they have gotten and here's hoping they get it! By far the most underrated band of all time!
