Pat DiNizio, Friday, July 7, 2000, at the Attic, Chattanooga, TN
by Roger Vaughn for DSP

Pat seemed to be in a really good mood all night, and, accompanied only by his hollow-body Epiphone, treated the crowd to all of the usual suspects ("Blood and Roses", "A Girl Like You", "Only a Memory", "Behind the Wall of Sleep", etc.) as well as lesser-known Smithereens tunes (he did "Groovy Tuesday" per my request). Also at my request, he dedicated "She's Got a Way" to my wife, Missy--her favorite song, which Pat confirmed (as I'd often suspected) was written about his 6-year old daughter, Liza.

Pat's choice of songs to cover was eclectic and inspired--"Don't Fear the Reaper", "Paranoid", "Behind Blue Eyes" and even a few bars of "Horse with No Name", until he finally admitted that he didn't "really know the words to this f-cking song" and had to cut it short. A personal highlight--Pat coercing me into making an ass of myself by singing the "Hey!" part in "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away". He ended the show with the mother of all Smithereens covers, "The Seeker". Incidentally, the show, which took place at The Attic in downtown Chattanooga, was recorded by Wild Oats Records to be included on the offical LRT CD.

Before, after and in-between his two sets, Pat wandered through the crowd, accommodating requests for autographs and chatting up most of the guests. Everyone I talked to was blown away with the show and Pat's hospitality. I imagine local record stores will notice something of a surge in Smithereens CD sales over the next few days (especailly since our LRT show is being followed by a big outdoor show with the entire band the very next night).
