O
nce upon a time...or maybe twice...perhaps even once upon a "time and time again"...there were four fab lads, named the Smithereens, who lived high up on a mountain at the top of Popville. One day, their peaceful town was invaded by the evil Green Thought Meanies from Slumberland. The Meanies were a jealous lot who were envious of the Popville population's happiness and riches. Out of
jealousy, their dastardly Green (Meany) Beret troops erected a wall of sleep all the way around Popville. This wall of sleep had magical properties
which kept all of the townspeople imprisoned and in a perpetual coma-like trance.
The Smithereens woke-up on a groovy Tuesday while the rest of Popville slept in submission. The magical sleep-inducing powers of the wall had
not yet reached the band. Apparently, they lived so high up on the mountain that it took more time to get the mojo working up there.
|
When the Smithereens realized what had taken place below them, they sprang into action immediately. Luckily, the boys had just bought a used magic bus to tour in from the Whos in neighboring Whoville. The 'Reens quickly jumped into their magical "yellow Smithereen bus" and flew away in it
to get help for their troubled Popville.
Unfortunately, Slumberland's marine division, the Bull Dozers, led by Mean Mr. Eliminator, saw the "yellow Smithereen bus" trying to escape.
The extremely tall White Castle Burger Bonkers threw humongous hamburgers at the fleeing vehicle. When Mr. Eliminator saw that the burgers were
not reaching their targets, he told them to hold the tomatos, hold the onions and hold their fire.
|
Before long, the yellow Smithereen bus began to sputter and wheeze - forcing the lads to land in "a lonely place". The Smithereens suddenly found
themselves in a bit of a pickle when their bus' exhaust pipe turned out to be clogged with flung burger ingredients.
As they made their landing on the ground, something suddenly darted out in front of the magic bus . Dennis slammed on the brakes immediately. A startled
creature stood before them. At first, Mike thought it was a cow, but then, instead of a "moo", he heard a "goo goo". It turned out to be an Australian baby
kangaroo. The band asked him his name.
|
Kangaroo: (shyly) Now I tell you that my name is Willy... William Wilson Wallaby.
Jim: Who "let him run wild"?... "Poor little pitiful one"!
Mike: It's a "long way back again"! "Anywhere you are"... you "can't go home anymore"!
Dennis: He "got a hold of my heart"... (sniffs) "life is so beautiful"! C'mon, you "crazy mixed-up kid"! "I don't want to lose you".
Pat: "It's alright". He can go "where I am going". Now, my fellow punch-drunk punchliners, let's stop with all these silly song titles before we
engage in an ugly title fight!
And, with that, Willy Wilson Wallaby happily hopped on board the "yellow smithereen bus". Henceforth, he would no longer be a "miles from nowhere man". Glad to have their new companion on board, the band fixed their clogged bus with relish and were on their merry way again.
|
At long last, the Smithereens reached the end of their journey. They looked at their compasses and knew that they had arrived at their final destination -
the "Point of West Point". Here, the band recruited Smith-Marine cadets to take back with them to help fight the evil Green Thought
Meanies.
No sooner had the Smithereens arrived back at Popville, than the warring factions assembled into battle lines. Sgt. Pat DiNizio was slapped in the cheek by the enemy's disembodied flying gloved hand named the Pointer of No Return. This immediately signaled the beginning of war. The cadets were
ready, however, and prepared for armed, unarmed or hand to flying hand combat.
|
"Jungle Jim" Babjak released a secret weapon - The Hand of Glory. The Hand of Glory was yet another powerful hand with flying powers.
It immediately chased after the Pointer of No Return. The Hand challenged The Pointer to a harrowing war game of rock, scissors,
paper. The Hand of Glory won the skirmish hands down. He made the hand symbol for rock, thus defeating the Pointer of No
Return's losing hand - the gesture for scissors.
Major Mike quickly rubbed a magic lamp and chanted: "I believe in Yesterday" three times. Afterwards, the genie Yesterday Girl emerged from the
lamp. She used her magical powers of altering time to regress Mean Mr. Eliminator back into a harmless baby - Wean Jr. Eliminator.
Deputy Dennis joined into the fray by firing smoking canisters at the enemy and chortling: "Drown in my own tear gas, suckers!"
|
Before long, the battle turned ugly with the introduction of the Smith-Marine's Liza in the Sky with Dynamite. Fearing that they might be "blown to smithereens", the enemy were forced to surrender. Willy Wilson Wallaby tried the war criminals in a kangaroo court whereby the Green Thought Meanies and all their henchmen were banished into their own slumber camps. There they were given a dose of their own medicine and spent the rest of their previously animated cartoon lives "sleeping the night away" in a state of suspended animation.
There was joy in Popville. The oppressive wall of sleep was immediately torn down and the once sleepy townspeople were now awakened to a heightened level of consciousness. The Hand of Glory formed the peace symbol behind them with its two upraised fingers. Once
again, the Smithereens and the Popville populace would live happily ever "before and after", now and then, here there and everywhere.
